In one of the most wildly misreported incidents in a long while, a 21 year old man named Michael Enright slashed a cab driver who happened to be Muslim. Not to mention that the the slasher was drunk.
The good news: The cab driver will survive.
The better news for the Liberal Media: The slasher is a white man.
So, when the story first broke, the left wing blogs and media pounced on the story asking if this was the first “Ground Zero Mosque Hate Crime”.
Only, their initial assumption was so off the mark that these “journalists” have been exposed as complete fools.
The Ground Zero Mosque never came up during the attack. And the drunken attacker was apprehended sitting in the middle of Third Avenue blocking traffic. And did we mention very drunk.
And the slasher reportedly worked for a group that is in favor of the Ground Zero Mosque.
That’s right. The young white guy slasher may be a crazed Muslim who is a Ground Zero Mosque supporter and the cab driver is a dark skinned Muslim from Bangladesh. What a nightmare for the left!
But wait! The Pro Mosque group he worked for says he might not be the same guy. But all the same, his pro Mosque High School buddies are erasing their digital ties to him.
“A former high school classmate of Enright’s, speaking to TPMMuckraker on background, expressed shock about the crime and spent the morning eliminating electronic footprints that connected the two. “It’s just disgusting, sad, horrific,” he said, adding that, like the group Enright was working with, he supports the Cordoba Project.”
New York Daily makes fools of themselves saying:
A boozed-up bigot who just returned from filming U.S. Marines in Afghanistan used a pocket knife to slash a cabbie – just because the driver was Muslim, police said Wednesday.
Michael Enright, 21, of upstate Brewster, was charged with felony attempted murder as a hate crime – among other crimes – after the sick attack on Ahmed Sharif, 43, Tuesday night.
Enright slashed Sharif across the face, arm and hand after asking the Bangladesh-born cabbie if he was Muslim and then saying ‘As-salaam alaikum’ – which means ‘peace be unto you’ in Arabic, cops said.
Oops. Someone didn’t bother to check the facts in their zeal to smear those against the Ground Zero Mosque.
The New York Times calls this an anti-Muslim stabbing:
The man charged with the anti-Muslim slashing and stabbing of a cabdriver was arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Manhattan Criminal Court on charges of second-degree attempted murder as a hate crime, first-degree assault as a hate crime and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
The Village Voice asks “Muslim Cab Driver Stabbed by Passenger: Is This Really Happening?”
ABC News reports “Slashed Muslim Taxi Driver to Visit NYC Mayor”.
It turns out that the slasher, Michael Enright, worked for Intersections International and recently spent several weeks embedded with a Marine outfit in Afghanistan filming interactions between the Marines and Afghans. Intersections International has come out in support of the Ground Zero Mosque.
Ben Smith at Politico has discovered:
The alleged anti-Muslim cabbie stabber made “nonsensical” statements to police after his arrest, a law enforcement source told me just now, adding to the puzzle over what drove Michael Enright to the apparent hate crime.
But the source said investigators see no evident connection to the Park51 project.
As I mentioned before, freighting a single violent crime with political meaning, as seems to be happening with this one, requires a lot of care.
Pay close attention to the last paragraph in the above quote. This may be the first public admission that this crime is not all the left had hoped it was.
New York Magazine also begins the backpedal maneuver:
So here are some twists to this morning’s story about the alleged slashing of a Muslim taxi driver in Manhattan:
And the article goes on to say:
Sharif (the Cabbie) gave chase, alerting a police officer. Enright was found sitting in the middle of Third Avenue blocking traffic.
Police said the Park51 (A.K.A. Ground Zero Mosque -ed) project was never mentioned during the attack.
So, what we have here is a case of the press acting stupidly and irresponsibly. The first “facts” in the story were wrong. Period. This was not a case of an anti-Muslim Hate Crime. In fact, some media outlets are reporting that Michael Enright is a Muslim. But there is no proof of this, either.
So in the end, all we have is a drunken, crazy man who stabbed someone else and was apprehended blocking traffic on Third Avenue, or possible sitting on the sidewalk.
He may or may not be Muslim.
He may or may not have worked for Intersection International.
The Ground Zero Mosque was never mentioned, although the Cabbie claims he asked him if he were a Muslim.
In the end, it seems we have a troubled 21 year old kid with a drinking problem and a screw loose. Nothing more.
A Ground Zero Mosque hate crime? Not hardly.
